Filming at Fire Department Facilities

Requests for filming/photographing on Los Angeles Fire Department facilities shall adhere to all requirements of these guidelines including fees, permits, and charges as dictated by FilmLA. Any filming venture that may suggest product or service endorsement or brings discredit to the Los Angeles Fire Department or its members will be disapproved. This may include, but not be limited to productions involving alcohol, tobacco, sexually explicit behavior, or any endeavor that may be determined to be illegal.

Requestors must submit a formal letterhead request to:

  1. Once Fire Department approval has been granted, a Department member will be assigned as the Fire Department liaison to the requestor.
  2. The requestor must sign a Los Angeles Fire Department Indemnity Agreement (F-1109B) and maintain a current insurance rider when the use of the facility involves a group of people and/or the public. These documents must be completed and filed in the Office of the Community Liaison Officer prior to filming.
  3. The requestor shall identify, IN WRITING, the specific dates and times when the Fire Department facility will be in use, no later that seven (7) business days prior to use, with any changes being approved by the City's Fire Chief or his representative. These dates shall be designated by the specific production activity [Prep, Hold, Strike (wrap), and Shooting].
  4. During normal use, the requestor shall not begin setup of daytime shoots prior to 7 a.m. and must fully vacate the Fire Department facility by 9 p.m. If filming needs extend past 9 p.m., prior WRITTEN CONSENT of the Station Commanders and notification of the Community Service Unit is required. At no time shall filming extend past 11 p.m.
  5. The requestor shall provide the necessary services and utilities to accommodate the needs of all persons involved in the production at the Fire Department facility.
  6. Under no circumstances shall the requestor borrow the apparatus, tools, or equipment of the Fire Department facility, or its personnel.
  7. Fire facility equipment relocated during the filming must be returned to its original location.
  8. Fire Department apparatus shall not be displaced outside of the facility during inclement weather.
  9. The ability of Fire Department resources at the facility to respond to an emergency shall not be impeded or delayed as a direct result of any filming.
  10. Any change in color of the fire facility, interior or exterior, must be specifically approved by the City's Fire Chief and shall be restored to the original color upon completion.
  11. There shall not be any drilling, nailing and/or screwing into the plaster, masonry, or wood of the Fire Department facility without the express approval of the City's Fire Chief.
  12. Whenever the "shooting company" is on premises of the Fire Department facility or the "production company" personnel are preparing or "striking" the Fire Department facility, a uniformed Fire Safety Officer shall be assigned. When the Fire Department facility is unoccupied, the Fire Safety Officer will provide both access and security for facility.
  13. The uniformed Fire Safety Officer shall not be used by the requestor as a liaison to personnel of the Fire Department facility to resolve conflicts of any type. All conflicts or changes shall be discussed with the on-duty Station Commander or, if unavailable, the assigned Fire Department contact member. Only Fire Department personnel or the on site Location Manager of the requestor are authorized to initiate these discussions.
  14. When the production activity impedes access to the kitchen area, the requestor shall provide meals for Department personnel. The anticipated times for meals shall be 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.
  15. A final walk-through of the Fire Department facility shall be made by a representative of the production company and a member from the Fire Department facility on the last day of use to ensure the facility has been returned in an acceptable condition. Any alteration or changes to the Fire Department facility that do not meet with the standard established by the City's Fire Chief shall be changed or repaired.
  16. Los Angeles Fire Department policy prohibits assessing any additional fees for filming on Department facilities. If offered, charitable donations may be accepted for designated Los Angeles Fire Department charities. The Community Liaison Officer will be pleased to provide a list of Fire Department charities and explain the donation process upon request.
