Photovoltaic solar cells have a clear weight/performance benefit compared to batteries for mobile infantry when their peak efficiency exceeds 50 %. This program is to combine such high efficiency solar cells with the various portable equipment carried in the field, including radios, computers, and flashlights, to provide charging for them during daylight lulls in activity, lessening the battery load to be carried.
To achieve this efficiency requires solar photon management including concentration (focusing) and color separation to cells optimized at individual wavelengths. Packaging of these optical components with the semiconductor cells and the equipment to be charged represents a problem worthy of targeted research, especially due to the constraints on size. Global packaging issues, such as treating the various systems, optical, electrical, etc., as sub-assemblies, or integrating platforms, for example mounting chips on optical parts, need to be addressed, and the results could alter the landscape of optoelectronic packaging.
