FINAL - Structure Fire; 12:20PM; 10007 Topanga Canyon Bl; internal:/; Chatsworth; Fire occurred in two adjoining split-level town homes of *three* occupiable floors over parking, and heavily damaged both units, as well as their *non-common* attic; One unit was vacant while undergoing remodel, while the adjacent unit housed a family of 5 who will be displaced by fire damage. They are now being assisted by the American Red Cross; Fire cause: Amateur effort by homeowner of vacant unit to solder pipe in downstairs wall shared with neighboring unit. The monetary loss from this fire is still being tabulated. FACT: According to the National Fire Protection Association, this is one of an estimated 4,400 U.S. structure fires occurring each year attributable to this and similar hot work by professionals and amateurs alike; On average each year, these fires lead to 12 civilian deaths, 208 civilian injuries and $287 million in direct property loss; - Brian Humphrey
