LAFD Hazardous Materials Task Force and LAFD Joint Hazard Assessment Team on scene. Approximately 25 occupants have been evacuated. Crews isolated the hazard area and denied entry while Gas Company crews were working to locate and mitigate the problem. Large LAFD presence in the area was precautionary with fire suppression group standing by. The leak has been stopped. No patients resulted from this incident. Units are being released. Firefighters found a 7,500 sq-ft two-story center-hallway apartment building built in 1959, with one unit fully involved with fire. Firefighters helped residents evacuate, as they advanced hose lines into the unit, including evacuating one resident who is paralyzed and could not self-evacuate. Firefighters on the roof cut a hole over the fire unit as fire attack companies extinguished the fire below. Firefighters set up blowers to clear the building of smoke, which was mostly kept from spreading through the hall. One patient complained of minor respiratory distress and has been evaluated by firefighter-paramedics on scene and transported to a local hospital. Red Cross has been notified to assist displaced residents. No other injuries. Update Knockdown Structure Fire; INC#1077; 04:32PM; 3443 S Carmona Av; http://bit.ly/2SBpmHf; Baldwin Hills / #Crenshaw; 33 Firefighters took 16 minutes to extinguish flames at the 2 story residential fourplex, confining fire to one *First* floor apartment with lesser damage to the apartment above from lapping flames. An adult female resident discovered in the rear yard with burns to her feet, had evacuated the structure prior to LAFD arrival. She will be taken by ambulance to an area hospital in fair condition. No other injuries reported.
