Fatality Fire in Boyle Heights

Wednesday, August 10, 2022

An early morning fire in Boyle Heights sadly took the life of a 68 year old woman.

At 4:07AM on August 10, 2022, the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 500 block of S Clarence St in Boyle Heights.

The first fire company arrived to find a two story, garden style apartment building with smoke showing. Firefighters immediately initiated an offensive, interior fire attack while the truck company spotted the aerial ladder and took to the roof for vertical ventilation.

After locating fire in a unit on the 2nd floor, crews quickly extinguished it just 20 minutes after receiving the 9-1-1 call. While the interior fire attack knocked down the blaze, vertical ventilation found some extension to the attic and crews continued working to ensure no fire remained.

Despite reports received from bystanders saying all occupants were out of the unit, firefighters conducted a thorough search and unfortunately located the remains of a 68 year old women. While audible smoke alarms could be heard activating in the surrounding units, it is not known at this time of the fire unit had functioning smoke alarms.

The Mayor’s Crisis Response Team and Los Angeles Chapter of the Red Cross were notified to provide assistance to the family.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section are actively investigating with Los Angeles Police Department and the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner-Coroner Office.
