LAFD Battles Downtown LA Commercial Blaze

Wednesday, December 2, 2020

DOWNTOWN - A commercial structure fire in Downtown LA on Wednesday evening took over 100 firefighters and nearly two hours to extinguish.

LAFD responded to the 500 block of E 9th St at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, to find heavy fire in a large two-story commercial building.

Firefighters performed salvage early in the incident, covering items in businesses on the first floor to protect them from water damage. The second floor (and attic) took a majority of the fire damage, burning mostly business offices and textiles.

After approximately 30 minutes, firefighters were forced to exit the building and fight the fire with defensive tactics (from the exterior). Master streams were deployed, including ladder pipes and large hand lines. Firefighters protected all nearby buildings from the flames and saved one feline, who was reunited with its owner.

After almost two hours, over 100 firefighters eliminated the flames set deep within the large commercial building. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
