SMOKE ALARM SAFETY

Did you know that roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no Smoke Alarms or no working Smoke Alarms? Fire spreads fast - working Smoke Alarms save lives and provide an early warning to ensure you and your loved ones have time to get safely outside.

Follow these tips to ensure that your Smoke Alarm is installed and working properly:

  • Install Smoke Alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area, on every level of the home, including any basement.
  • Use interconnected Smoke Alarms so that when one Smoke Alarm sounds, they all sound.
  • Test all Smoke Alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button, and be certain all family members recognize the sound.
  • If a Smoke Alarm fails to sound when you press the test button, chirps once every few minutes - or is more than 10 years old, the entire Smoke Alarm should be replaced.
  • Discuss and practice your home fire escape plan when you test your Smoke Alarms each month.
