Update Complete - Rescue; INC#0537; 08:35AM; 1332 Laveta Terrace; http://bit.ly/2SvpUif; Echo Park; Address corrected from Sunset Blvd. An adult male transient staying beneath a massive tree was trapped for nearly 30 minutes when a hillside tree toppled, also bringing down energized electric wires and significantly damaging an adjacent 2 story apartment building. The first arriving LAFD crew stabilized the trapped man while working with a chainsaw to create a rescue path and lessen the weight upon him, as additional LAFD personnel, including those specially certified in Urban Search & Rescue responded to the scene. Those LAFD responders quickly used the 50 Ton lift capacity of an extended boom of an LAFD Heavy Rescue unit to lift the tree off the man, who amazingly sustained only minor injury. He has declined offered ambulance transportation to an area hospital. No other injuries were reported. The L.A. Department of Building & Safety is responding to assess damage to the apartment building, at which time LAFD will determine resident displacement. LADWP is en route to repair the downed power lines. Though there has been rain and wind in the area, the LAFD does not formally determine the specific cause of trees toppling.
