Duties of a Fire Inspector

  • Inspects potentially hazardous structures, equipment, and processes for compliance with fire prevention and life safety laws and regulations
  • May conduct technical and legal research related to the standards of fire safety 
  • May perform specialized staff duties and other related work

  • Members must have a minimum of four years of experience with the LAFD

  • Multiple Choice Test

    • 50% of overall score

    • In the multiple-choice test, candidates may be examined for knowledge of: the most current laws, ordinances, and codes pertaining to the duties of a Fire Inspector, including, but not limited to: the California Code of Regulations, the Los Angeles City Fire Code, the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) Rules and Regulations, the LAFD Manual of Operations, the LAFD Department Training Bulletins, the LAFD Administrative Bulletins, the LAFD Books, the LAFD Driver’s Training Manual, the LAFD Accident Prevention and Safety Program, the LAFD Discrimination Prevention Policy Handbook, the LAFD radio operation and communication procedures, and LAFD brush clearance compliance.

  • Essay

    • Advisory

    • At the time of the multiple-choice test, candidates will be required to prepare some written material (an advisory essay) on a topic related to the duties of a Fire Inspector. This material will not be separately scored, but will be presented to the interview board for discussion with the candidate, and for consideration in some of the areas covered in the interview, as described in the next paragraph. This written response will not be separately scored, but its content and quality will be considered in the evaluation of the candidate's overall qualifications. Candidates who do not respond to the essay question will be disqualified from the examination.

  • Interview

    • 50% of overall score 

    • In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: judgment and decision making, fact finding, customer service, oral communication, the ability to complete assignments in a diligent and timely manner, the ability to pursue developmental opportunities to enhance performance; and job knowledge, which may include the ability to: detect various unsafe conditions, appliances, devices, and systems, and violations pertaining to fire and life safety; to conduct inspections pertaining to Los Angeles City Fire Code compliance; to use prudent judgment in applying various codes, regulations, standards, and other legislation; to effectively communicate orally to convey Code requirements and other technical information; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
