Fast Moving Florence House Fire Claims One Life

FLORENCE-

The Los Angeles Fire Department quickly extinguished flames at a south Los Angeles home Sunday evening, in what proved to be a deadly fire.

 

The blaze was reported at 6:18 PM on April 28, 2024, at 140 East 71st Street in the Florence neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Forty LAFD responders under the command of Battalion Chief Peter Hsiao arrived quickly, and took just 14 minutes to fully extinguish fire in the small one story home.

During their attack on the flames, firefighters discovered a 52-year-old man lifeless in the residence. Beyond medical help, he was determined dead at the scene.

A positive identification of the decedent, as well as the specific cause, time and manner of his death, will be determined by the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner.

No other injuries were reported. One woman displaced by the fire, stated a desire to seek her own accommodations.

Firefighters discovered no evidence of functional smoke alarms in the residence, as required by law. The 101-year-old building was not equipped with optional residential fire sprinklers.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation by LAFD Investigators.
