LAFD Fire Investigators Rescue Trapped Kittens in Burned Out Floor

Monday, June 14, 2021

WESTLAKE - Los Angeles City Fire Department Fire Investigators returned to a previously burned home to find kittens under the floor boards, trapped in the house that had been boarded up after the fire.

Members from LAFD's Arson Counter Terrorism Section returned to the location of a structure fire (with owner's permission) near MacArthur park to create an educational video regarding fire cause determination, and give LAFD Accelerant Detection Canine Blue more practice. Shortly after arriving, Fire Investigators discovered that a litter of kittens was living in a crawl space under the floor boards.

Investigators retrieved the kittens from their hiding place and gave them some pet food. They were concerned that the feline mother was unable to return to her litter due to the house being boarded up after the fire. Investigators contacted LA Animal Services, but due to a heavy call load at the time, were unable to respond immediately. Investigators instead delivered the kittens directly to LA Animal services and they appeared to be happy and healthy upon transfer.
