SAFER Grant Provides LAFD with Additional Resources

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

LOS ANGELES  – The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) has fortified resources at four busy fire stations as the result of a $15.4 million dollar federal grant that was awarded to the Department last year.

Four new fire engines went into service on Sunday, July 8th, in Echo Park (Fire Station 20), Lincoln Heights (Fire Station 1), Reseda (Fire Station 73) and Mission Hills (Fire Station 75). All of the engines are staffed with four members; one Captain, one Engineer, and two firefighters.

The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant that was awarded to the LAFD last year by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) allowed the Department to hire an additional recruit class in early 2018.  This recruit class created the additional staffing necessary to staff the four new engines. The LAFD received the largest SAFER grant in the nation in 2017, and has again applied for a new round of grant funding this year to increase the resources available to respond throughout the City.

“Thanks to the SAFER grant, we were able to add back fire engines at these four busy stations across Los Angeles,” said LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas. “These new engines will provide additional fire and EMS services to our communities, as we answer more than 1,300 emergency calls every day.”
